Introduction of the event and publication.
The question of identity is a complex and multifaceted one that has been the subject of much philosophical and cultural discussion throughout history. However, with the advent of contemporary art, this question has taken on a new dimension. Rather than simply identifying certain characteristics that distinguish individuals or groups, contemporary art offers a space for exploring the inconsistencies and complexities of identity. This is the focus of the Mixed Media Art Exhibition and Talks, which took place from November 19 to December 14, 2022 at the Cambodian-German Cultural Center, "Meta House Goethe-Center" in Phnom Penh.
Featuring the works of Tor Vutha, Erick Gonzalez, Robit Pen, Vannak Khun, Tytaart, and Carlo Santoro, the exhibition aimed to challenge simplistic notions of identity and encourage personal reflection on the complexities of identity in the modern world. The works on display included a range of media, from painting and sculpture to performance and photography. Visitors were invited to coexist with a permanent condition of simultaneous ID-Entities, offering a new perspective on each other's identities.
The exhibition was published in two editions, a limited hardcopy edition in November 2022 and an extended digital edition in April 2023, both published by the American University of Phnom Penh. The event was supported by the National Library of Cambodia and was made possible thanks to the contributions of Nicolaus Mesterharm, Director of Meta House Phnom Penh, and Wyn Thomas, University Librarian at the American University of Phnom Penh.
